I plan on using clay flue liner, 8x8, and also a brick chimney. The way I have it planned is for the entry arch to support just the flue liner, and I will use angle iron to support the chimney brickwork on piers to the sides.

As a rule, any brick not exposed to direct flame do not need to be fire brick.

Did you finish this and do you have pics?
Did you insulate between the flue liner and brick chimney or just left an air gap?
How does it perform?

I changed it a little bit and did not use steel. I used perlcrete to insulate and form a brick ledge and built the chimney on that. It performs very well.

Is there just an air gap between the brick chimney and the inner clay flue liner? Or did you insulate that as well?

It is filled with loose perlite.
