  • First time oven build

Finally after years of wanting one I get around to building my very own Wood fired oven, i have decided to go with cast mainly because of the time /effort and cost of using firebrick. I have the base up and am about to install the fire board and firebrick hearth. The floor measurement is going to be 120cm
here are photos of the build so far

Great to see another Aussie on board giving it a go.
Welcome aboard and I hope you get what you plan on. Building with brick is not that difficult and you don't necessarily need to use firebricks

    Cheers.

Hi fellow Pizzaioli, here is an update to my build, I have formed the dome and started on the entrance formwork. next will be the dome cast, any suggestions as to what i can add to the ciment fondue and crusher dust mix to make it less prone to cracking?

Stainless steel fibres add 2% by weight. Try Antec Engineering. The real name is melt extract fibres.

How thick did you make the dome?

                  Re: First time oven build

I have not cast the dome yet. what you see is the sand and plasterboard mould.
I will make the dome 4 inch thick then 3 inch of insulation then 3 inch of perlite then 1 inch of render then tiles

I am using fire board below the hearth and fire blanket insulation around the dome

                        Re: First time oven build

That is a pretty thick dome for a casting and it will take ages to dry. don't attempt to fire it for two or three weeks, so the weather can dry it for you. Water trapped in the middle of the walls will blow them apart if it turns to steam suddenly.Follow the manufacturers recommendations for initial firing, nothing more than 25 C increase / Hr from memory. It varies depending on the thickness. Presuamably you didn't add fibres to assist with the water elimination so you must take it really easy, otherwise you are bound to get cracking or blowing ( oops, I see it's cracked already. Plug it up with some more of your mix.

                            Hi friends
Yes the fire board is recessed
The crack is not a crack but a cut which I made in both directions approx 50 mm deep. Thanks for the tip I am emptying it today of the sand.
