Well just a couple of photos of the second course - didn't go too bad although got a few bricks a bit out of square - so hot here at the moment you really have to work pretty quick - anyway now the interesting part, joining the arch and dome. Plan on building the arch with each course of bricks as I go up. Does anyone forsee any problems I may encounter doing it this way ?????????

        Gudday
Check out karangi dudes build. Basically built his arch first ...but here's the important bit.... Beveled the inner part of the brick arch so the angles match the dome. Couldn't get a more better way I recon

Yes Dave, thats exactly what I plan to do except I won't build the arch all at once but as I lay each course.
Cheers and thanks for the input

So your building the arch as you go ....so what about an arch form/ frame ...remember your building on more than one plane. I like the safety of at least a constant. The arch is built first ..then you can adjust to it ?
            Regards Dave
By the way I'm old school square entrance married to a dome ... Trust me you don't what to go that path .... The angles blew my small brain

Re: Camo's new 36" build Brisbane

              Hi Camo,

I have to admit the tying in of the arch to dome did my head in.

I built the arch first and then cut bricks to fit. Became frustrating as you try to keep it looking good, but then I realised it was unlikely anyone would see any "dodgy" work unless they stuck their head in the oven

Karangi seemed to get it right, but then he had learnt from earlier experience. It probably would help if you have a saw bench where you can cut various angles. I only had an angle ginder, so the angles and cuts were far from perfect or consistent.

              Good Luck

Hi Colin, I plan to tile straight on top of the hebel bricks when I have finished the whole oven. I've done this on the other benches and have not had any problems
Easy to maintain and keep clean

                  Cheers

Just completed the third course. Everything is going along smoothly. Made a couple of mistakes lining up the bricks but just have to put that down to the heat and humidity. In fact I had to go and get a small gazebo to put over the top when I'm working Click image for larger version

Started on the arch as well - made a template out of ply which should do the job nicely.

It looks like from the pics that you will end up with a teardrop oven rather than a dome as your arch is too far forward.

Recon you right bricky, perhaps a pic from the side would make things clearer?
By the way a teardrop shape will still work as well.

Yes Brickie, bit of a f*** up there. I actually changed the way I was going to cut the bricks for the arch on a whim without thinking from a width of 115 to 75 so I am out 40mm on the dome. So I had to use the old eyeometer to hook it into the arch. Anyway after a bit of a holiday over Christmas I have got back into it and here are some pics. It didn't work out that bad and I will slowly bring the front brinks in the dome a little forward as I go up.

I actually finished the dome and transition today so here is the finished product. Brickwork is a bit crappy but ...

Too late I suppose, but all them great globs of mortar in the oven will fall off as the oven is heated, hopefully not in your food.
