(21-06-2015) The two layers of ceramic fibre blanket were not that bad to install with an enthusiastic helper (as I have had all the way so far) who enjoyed the novelty of dressing up in all of the PPE, but I am glad to have finished it - I will be happier when I get to cover it up with some perlite render. I got the wire on and then had to wrap it all back up in the tarp until my next chance to work on it.

Thanks PizzaCharlie, I am pretty stoked with the progress - my plan has been to get it finished in time to use for Christmas, at this rate I should get time to do a good number of practice runs before actually having to cook for a larger group

I believe the length of SS flue c/w chinamans hat that sits onto the SS base in the pictures could remain removable but I plan to put a few self tapping screws into it to ensure it is held plum. (I guess these could be taken out if I ever wanted to moth ball the oven over winter)

The SS base and precast gallery are permanent. I have an old bowl sitting over the base in one photo - that is there just to protect the tarp from being cut on the sharp edge

I got my first layer of perlite render on my oven today - I'm hoping to get another on tomorrow afternoon. I will post some pics on Monday from my laptop as I don't seem to be able to do it from my iPad.

Drying the vermicrete layer takes time as it contains so much water. It is better to wait a few days to allow it dry somewhat before doing the next layer. Excess moisture in the insulation layer can present problems

I just did a layer a day and it worked out fine. When you fire it up the moisture comes out anyhow. It does take a week or so for the moisture to come out and the surface goes white with no grey patches once it's done. My only issue was painting it prior to all the moisture going. This caused some minor blistering in the paint which largely resolved itself.

My head knows you are right and have provided sound advice.... but my heart over ruled and I applied a second coat after 24 hours. The first coat was 5-8mm thick (I poked a hole in it by accident when seeing how hard it was) and the second 10-12mm.

I decided to put the second layer on as I will not be able to work on the oven for the next 3 weeks and I am hoping the 15-20mm total thickness will dry sufficiently in this amount of time

As it will be a number of weeks before I get to put another layer on, will I need to add bondcrete or a similar product to the mix or will the next layer stick ok?

Don't paint, mix, or add anything between "dried" layers of Vcrete. You don't want anything trapping moisture in the insulation layer. A good brushing with a dry paint brush or better yet, vacuuming with a shop vac to remove the loose dust is all that you need to do. Then with a paint brush, lightly dampen the surface before the next coat. You can lightly dampen the surface a little at a time, just staying a little ahead of the next application .
