It may not be a popular opinion, but I have no problem using the low duty ones. Have used them a few times w/no issues, especially if that's all you can get. True, medium are better, but sometimes you just use what you can get, etc. I know others that have used them also w/no issues. Weren't the ones (mediums)you were looking into 3" thick? I'd weigh the pros and cons and go w/it. I can only say if it were mine and it became an issue getting the mediums and cost/time was another factor, I wouldn't hesitate to roll w/the low duty ones. Just be sure they are actual, low duty firebrick, not clay reds.

+1 on that. I would guess that the majority of the ovens documented on this site were built with low duty firebrick. Most brick yards only stock what is required for fireplaces. So that is what is most common to find.

It’s not the oven I am talking about... it’s the floor... can the bricks in the web link above be used as a floor

from site:::: Fire Bricks are designed to withstand higher temperatures for longer periods of time and are ideal for building residential fireplaces, outdoor firepits, and grills. Use with Mortar Clay. Meets ASTM C-1261 Standard Specification for Firebox Brick for Residential Fireplaces.

Yes. My oven floor is going on 8-9 years, I use it year round. No problems.

I didn't see a link, but yes, we cook directly on the floor all the time. No issues.

Thanks NCMan... Russell took down the link as conflicts with FB policy but it’s the muddox brand standard clay residential fire place brick... I can get those here... 4.95 each..

a lot and I mean a lot of people cook directly on fire brick... but honestly I am not so sure cooking directly on any fire brick is truly safe... no one responded to my post... you think safety would be the number one concern here... as bricks break down they release a tiny toxic particulate?? Don’t see much talk about it.. it concerns me.. the safety of my kids and grandkids.. yup.. they call me papa D.. it won’t stop me from building... I’ll probably go with a pizza stone... aloha!!!! \uuu/

Sounds good! Maybe, post Covid. To answer your query about cooking directly on the floor bricks:

Consider that whatever the bricks "give off" will be on any and every surface and in the air in the oven. Provided the bricks are free of heavy metals (such as lead) you should not have concerns with cooking on the bricks.

I would avoid bricks with added colours. What you want is the most natural product you can find.

I answered, I think. Anyway, there are people everywhere that cook directly on firebrick. I do it and have for decades.

Mahalo!!! \uuu/...

other then that just waiting on the rain to dry out to start my base... in the meantime trying to figure out the best bricks size for my oven floor.. I have 2 options 18x18x3... and 12x12x3... cutting circles out of square bricks not my forte’ but hope to be putting floor bricks on the barge soon... stoked... materials slowly falling into place... cheers to putting Covid 19 behind us and to a better 2021... Test from iPhone8

EDIT: Here is a workaround for sending a pic from an iPhone to the forum in a pinch. I'm not sure if it will work with all platforms. (I use Outlook) I mailed this photo to myself. It will prompt for a size. I chose large. I opened it im my email, selected the photo and chose save image. That saved it back to my photos as the most recent pic.Now with a resized copy, I was able to add it to this post.
