I just did a calc to see what the oven weighs using this table. Mass, Weight, Density or Specific Gravity of Bulk Materials

It came to just under 6 metric tonnes..

I priced some stone pavers to go around the outer shelf of the enclosure.
One place wanted $540, I got some similar but slightly different for $240 from a different outlet.

It sure does pay to shop around.

              Some more pics.
Its almost done except for the roof and bulk insulation.

The loose stone will hide the removable damper.

                  Congratulations Brickie, it's absolutely beautiful!

You really do have vision. The detailing is so nice - the mantel/lintel above the damper is a special touch!

Ive given it a good fire and got to 600c, this oven burns beautifully.

I have added 500 litres of loose vermiculite over the top and down the sides but I think I will need more to get more cover over the top of the oven.

I need a Gargoyle for the top of the oven in front of the chimney.

In this pic you can see the cold spots where the carbon hasnt burnt off at 600c.

There will be cold spots at the back corners and towards the front, cold as in less then 600c.

The flue is middle front of pic.

                          Hi Brickie,

Can you let us all know how the 1" + loose vermiculite combination goes,,

I'll be up to that stage soon and i was thinking the same thing.

Also did you "press down" the banket with chicken wire?? or will those blankets stay in place?

                          Cheers,

                          Gummz

No chicken wire, the blanket stays where you put it, even vertically.

I started doing the roof today, its a ply base with asphalt roof tiles.
The oven now reminds me of a gingerbread house.
Im sure Hanse and Gretel will show up shortly..

Ive only done 1 side, the weather side as I have to add more vermiculite and still need access, all up I will have used 900 litres of the stuff.

The ply is FormPly used for concrete work, when you get it make sure its the Australian type as the Chinese rubbish rots, Ive never before seen FormPly rot until I used the Chinese stuff..

The oven is now finished, I finished the roof and added the extra vermiculite and now have about 300mm of loose vermiculite over the top of the oven.

Party time. Canceled due to bad date timing.
