Re: Well i quess im building an oven!

    Sounds reasonable.

At times I wish I had less mass for quicker heat up.
But when I throw a brisket in my WFO 36 hours later... I'm glad I have the additional mass.
    Retained heat is pretty nice.

    Just food for thought.

Maybe Dmun will let us know how well his WFO retains heat.

Im a pizza and appitzer man, thats what this oven is for. Ive cooked in places with a wfo and personally i dont mind the heating up period - thats beer time just being outside in the sun with beer and freinds, thats a great day no matter what! I scamed 24 fire bricks from work for free and found 16 on my property, its almost like i was meant to build this.....at least thats my story! Any other tips is appreciated.

It looks good! You'll be a mason before you know it!

And I like your signiature line...

I spent the last day working the angles for the dome and ill be cutting the bricks in half and in thirds and placing them on thier side, will make the work more efficient (in my mind anyway). The amount of mass ill save is tremendous, and my local hardware store has huge bags of vermiculite that has been there for years, i get at a steal So this is the new plan for my dome. I think with the cheap vermiculite i can put on 8" on my dome so the thinner walls will have plenty of insulation!
less of everythin', but more time I'm sure!

Looking good and a nice thread to follow. I was not going to reinforce my slab but saw some chain link fence and will throw it in the hole under the oven area ( I read that the mesh does not stop the concrete from cracking, but keeps it together when it does) .

Just a quick note: Cutting every brick is very labor intensive. No time saver there.

I will be cutting no more than anyone else....actually less, i will be cutting the bricks in 0.50, 0.333, and 0.25 and by laying them on their side yields me more hight per course. Additionally the angles for the brick are really not that steep. I was thinking of buying a big ball from wallyworld to use as a form/support. I will try to build the forms for the hearth in the next two days.......more to come!

Got the bricks today and laid the floor out. The next question is do i mortar the soldier course to the floor?

                          Fireandflames,

No need to mortar the soldier course to the floor. I actually did mortar the two bricks on the floor that made up my interior arch however but no need for the other ones. You will mortar them side by side just not to the floor.

Trust me, it's not going anywhere.

I actually used newspaper strips to keep from mortaring mine down. I think it may need to expand, so I didn't want to keep it from doing so. Of course, this may not have been necessary at all, but it wasn't any extra work, really.
