Thanks Al I remember that. This was just a mockup to see what the radius could look like. I was waiting for the last ingredient for my homebrew (lime) to arrive and needed something to do

Think I should go for a tighter radius in my arch? the radius now is 119 cm. Like I said earlier my bricks are tapered for this radius. It looks scary flat.

All arches want to push out and lay straight, a flat arch even more so.
You need to compensate for the outward forces some how.

I think you will be fine with a "scary flat' arch.

I buttressed my outer arch with angle iron as shown in the attached. I'm not sure it was necessary but it gave me piece of mind and my oven is working beautifully and the small cracks I have have not gotten any bigger in the last 2 months of heavy use.

I still have a while before I decide "How low I can go".
I may chicken out and go for smaller radius just so I can sleep at night

I have all the materials needed for home brew so now I can start making it look like an oven.
I felt I did not need a layer of sand/clay under the floor bricks as slab was very smooth and level.
I'll be using homebrew 1,1,1,3 or 1,1,1,4 and the first course will not be mortared to the floor.

Anything else I should keep in mind laying the first two courses?

Tried to mortar a few bricks and I'm having problems keeping the joints small.
The mortar compresses really fast with the small amounts I was hoping to use and I don't feel like there's a uniform bond though out the joints.
Any advise? Should try adding more water to my mix?

                    I'm back...
Cut a few bricks this week and now I can work on my arch. Not really looking forward to this part of the build but it has to be done

It's starting look like a sphere... and bricks are getting more difficult to lay. May have to use a gym ball soon.
I'm hoping to close it up this week so that I can start to work on my external arch.
I've found a source for perlite in Porgrunn, here in Norway. Thanks to some math help here on the forum I figure I'll need 2 x 200 ltr. bags of the stuff to insulate my dome. If I can't find ceramic blanket I'll be using Rockwool under the perlite.

Thanks... sure is expensive stuff. I may have to go with only one layer and then rockwool over that.

I've been in contact with refractory experts in Norway and they think I should use a more environment friendly insulation blanket with AES fibers, FyreWrap?/Insulfrax? S blanket. It is less expensive too at least here in Norway.
                            Any thoughts on AES fibers?

No thoughts on the insulation but your build is coming along very nice! Keep posting more pics. Also, what town are you located in Norway?

I used firewrap but dont use type that has a polyalumium outer wrap. It is a possible barrier for water vapor.
