Finished mortaring the travertine base on the WFO (wood fired oven) today, except for the front, as I need to complete the brick arch over the wood storage area first. Next is the stucco above and the brick arch on the front. I'm sore but I love travertine!
Thanks NCMan! Trying to get stucco mortar was a real pain here in central VA. Home Depot didn't have it. The local concrete places didn't know what I was talking about, and the lumber yard wanted 5x the price! I finally ordered Quikrete Base and Finish bags from Lowes and they'll be here on the 14th. Colorant is coming from www.earthpigments.com . I'm doing a sunflower yellow, which is a combination of lemon yellow and yellow oxide. The mix is 0.5kg per 80 lb bag of each colorant for the finish coat. Turns out that you can't just order anything, because some pigments deteriorate with with UV.
Well, I'm glad you finally found what you were looking for. I'm sure it's all going to turn out great. I'm guessing you won't be doing much this weekend w/all the rain coming. Keep us all posted w/your progress. It's looking real nice!!
Thanks NCMan! Hope you're doing OK with the rains. It's been dreary here, but nothing like the coast or SC. We have cousins in Charleston and I'm really feeling bad for them right now. Can't wait to do the stucco now.
Just picked up the stucco for the pizza oven from Lowes. They don't stock it so I had to special order it. Here's the back of the oven with a base coat. Finish coat will be a white stucco finish coat mixed with yellow oxide and lemon yellow colorants. Should yield a sunflower yellow color.
Completed the finish coat of stucco on the oven. The mortar colorants were from www.earthpigments.com . I wanted a sunflower yellow color, so I mixed equal parts of Nickel Antimony Yellow Rutile (Lemon Yellow color oxide) together with Yellow Iron Oxide, and white finish stucco. 0.5kg for each color will cover 1 80lb bag of stucco.
