Here is a link of how a tapered arch is done that is similar to yours. It is from GF and Mr. C.

Wish I had tapered my arch bricks like that. Russell, I'm certain that would have made crossing the arch a hole lot easier.

            Chris,

Your build turned out very nice anyway, especially liking the slate roof.

Keystone for arch - I had to mortar two brick together to get the dimensions I wanted:

Re: 42" Build Underway in Central Alabama

I've been trying to wrap my mind around the best way to keep my bricks from sliding when I get to the courses with steeper angles. I've seen several different solutions others have used. I decided to try making a "clip" to put over the brick (surely someone has done this before - but I couldn't find any related posts).

I had some Simpson Strong-Tie straps left over from a previous project. I bent them to snap over the brick - and hold against the back side of the brick on the course below.

It was so simple and easy, I decided to post photos here:

As the courses get steeper, I should be able to hang a weight from each clip to hold the brick in place:

Ummm, nice innovation to the string and weight method.

Well, the "brick clips" worked very well. In fact, I didn't need to use weights until the next to last course.

The only caveat was when a violent thunderstorm blew up unexpectedly. Afterward, I noticed that a couple of brick had shifted (leaned)...but the mortar was well set by the time I discovered this. I didn't see that it was bad enough to chip them out for a redo, so I left them like that.
