It will exceed 500 F there for sure. Flames often lick around that point on my oven. I use vermicrete there. If concerned about that not being adequate use some calcium aluminate cement to mix with the vermiculite or source a product that can handle the heat. The highest rated silicon I could find is Permatex Ultra Copper @ 700 F intermittent.

I received my third piece of Supervent yesterday, and although there are a few small dents I am thinking of living with them, as I am not sure I can do better unless I buy locally and don't leave the store with anything other than pristine. Just have to see if I can orient the dents towards the rear where they won't stick out like a sore thumb.

I have two questions regarding the vent build. I was planning on laying the first course on top of what is essentially an extension of the floor bricks (with a small heat break) without mortar, similar to how the dome bricks sit on the floor. Is this what most builders do or are these bottom bricks mortared? I didn't size any of the cuts for an extra mortar layer so I hope it is not needed.
I also ordered some high temperature silicone to squirt in behind my rope gasket which will be in the horizontal gap running along the top of the vent arch. This version of high temp is rated to 500F, which I think will be exceeded by a fully soaked oven. Should I be looking at a higher rated product? I think the gasket and location will keep hot gasses out but how about operating temperatures.

    JR,

This is the point where some builders hurry along just to finish the ovens. It takes time to cut and fit this part of the oven. The vent chamber and the "L" cuts look very good and I am sure you will be happy in the long run even though it takes time. One of these days you will get an undented chimney stack LOL.

Your not kidding. What you attached above looks like what I attached below, but when I click on it, it turns into what I attached in post 160. I think the forum is infected or hacked?? Maybe just another disastrous update??

Yes I do. I posted 4 pictures above in post # 154. The first 2 disappeared and were replaced by those shown. If ti go to edit the pics, the first 2 aren't there and the ones I posted are??
In the forth one (that I did post) you can't tell but the arch form is 1.5 inches bigger than the opening in my inner arch, so yes I have a 1 1/2 inch reveal.

PS, your member-mod designation disappeared too!

    JR,

I may be "shooting from the hip", but are you going to have a reveal on your inner arch for your insulated door?

My work on the oven has really slowed, but I am making progress in little steps and am getting closer to start mortaring up my vent arches. I now have all the bricks cut for the basic arches and have my plywood forms cut out too. All that is left is to mark up the forms for brick position and maybe cut a freestanding form for the upper part of the serpentine vent. The weather is not helping, as it has been either storming or if clear very near 40 degrees. Hoping to get a break in the weather on a day other things aren't happening.

Cripes, got another one and it's dented too. They are going to try one more time....
I'll have to have a scratch and dent sale!
