    Interesting do you think the home brew is more forgiving because it has actual fire clay? Also, I'm assuming fire clay is considered just the left over brick dust I save after I clean out the brick saw right?

      No, fire clay is typically mason clay that is available at many "professional mason suppliers" IE HC Muddox is one and very inexpensive. Some builders have found powdered clay at pottery supply houses as well. You can use brick cutting/slurry but some builders report it is not as good as fire clay and more harder to work with.
