  • Great way to start your fires.

For all those who don't want to waste time with paper, kindling or fatwood; hit it with the natural gas.

My BBQ is hooked into my house natural gas line and is only 6 feet away from my 42" WFO. Add a "T", a couple of shut off valves, quick-connect, 10ft of gas hose, and three feet of gas pipe and you got yourself a fire stick. I drilled small holes an inch apart in the last 12" of the gas pipe.

Lay the pipe in the WFO with the gas OFF. build your wood pile in the criss-cross pattern above the pipe. Light a fireplace match and set it next to the pipe. Turn on the gas slowly and you got yourself a fire. AT full power I only need to leave the pipe in for three minutes. Turn it off and pull it out..Carefully.......it is hot.

the flame looks really yellow... do you have a mixing hole near the gas inlet? (like on a gas grill burner)

        Hmmm.... not sure

I'm not sure how big the hole would need to be to provide the right mixing...
I would take a look at the size & position of the hole on a regular grill burner... and shoot for something the same size so start with...

but.. if it's working fine for you as is... why mess with it? I just wondered is all, because I was thinking of making something similar at one stage...

I went the easy route, harbor freight sells a weed burner and I had a propane tank for camping.

Greg, your approach is cool. I HAD to buy this to get the weeds out of my rock - then one day I said, what the hell. From then on, the WFO is fired

Sorry about the quality - it was obviously dark when I recorded this.

I have one just like Les I use for my portable pizza oven. When I get in a hurry I roast the top of the bricks with it. The IR themometer shows I can get up to 1000 degrees this way. It also works as a quick recharge between pizzas since I do not have a live fire going.
On the down side, my wife thinks it sounds like a jet engine and the dogs howl.

I'm not ashamed to admit - at times I act like a 5 yr old on Christmas morning.

The weed burner is definately "cool" and having been around jet engines when the test them off the back of an aircraft carrier, it does have a similar sound, except i bet your ears aren't bleeding.

I thought about going with the weed burner but didn't want to buy a propane tank and store it when I had NG right on site. For anyone who has tried hooking up a propane grill to a NG source .......it doesn't work too well without a conversion kit for flow and hole size.

                    Thus the NG fire stick.
