    Gudday
Sorry I don't want to appear to be rude but. I don't see a moisture barrier in that slab? If you have not included one in your construction it would be Advantage to use the foil as a moisture barrier to prevent water from wicking into your oven structure

      yep there's no moisture barrier.
nothing I can do about that now except live with it..

if it becomes a problem - I'll use the cream on the bottom row of blocks.

The soil is granite based and it probably more porous than the concrete. :P

Re: Modified 3G Masterly Tail Build

So in order to save a little cash, I have decided to put the floor bricks on big side down (so a 75mm height)

This will save me around 40 bricks, but I'll also lose 40mm of thermal mass from the floor.

I have already added 50mm extra in concrete, so I'm just going to run with what I've got and see how it goes.

It will be 2" extra than what is under most Pompeii's - so it should be ok.

How much are fire brick now . At the time I built they were $3.30 ea and were roughly 1/2 my build cost. ( we always discount our labour don't we)

But there should be insulation between the hearth bricks and the supporting slab.....

There's what looks like 100mm (4") of vermicrete there.

Re: Modified 3G Masterly Tail Build

They are still around the 3.30 mark.

I managed to get 200 for $400, and don't feel like spending any more than that.

Built as per the plans requires 230 bricks. Laying the floor 75mm means I won't have to buy any more, and should use about 190 bricks.

Yep- I have layed a 4" structural slab, then 4" of perlcrete, and then 2" of thermal mass.

(I probably should delete that pic from the plans that shows 4" of mass under the floor)

Re: Modified 3G Masterly Tail Build

So I'll be laying the floor, walls and hopefully the vault this weekend.

The plans call for an oven opening of 400mm, but I'll be widening this to 450mm, or about 18 inches, and per the standard.

Floor width is 34" so I am hoping that the extra 2 inches will improve the burn, and access to the oven.

The swishy oven I built previously has a 400mm opening, and although adequate, I think it's a little on the restrictive side. I'm hoping the extra 50mm will make all the difference.

Not sure how that will effect the opening arch - I will just have to 'make it work' without effecting the opening height.
The plans call for using 50mm bricks for the opening, But I will be cutting full size bricks in half to make these. (should about 35mm after cutting)

I'm just going to 'make them fit'

Ok so made a good deal of progress on the weekend, got the floor all layed down. I went for an easy pattern, rather than the more time consuming 'herringbone' style which is so popular with Pompei builders.

Re: Modified 3G Masterly Tail Build

I also got the walls all stacked up and square, and the formwork & reinforcing in place. I also poured the concrete into the wall cavities, but sorry no photos of this.

Next job is to make the form for the vault ceiling, and then some brick cutting to make the bevel on the opening, and also to cut the bases of the vault where they will join on to the top of the walls.

Not long to go now before I have it closed in.

Two things that in time you may regret, the hearth bricks will move over time but if they are laid diagonally they dont seem to pose such a problem to the peel as bricks laid at 180 degrees do.

Extra thermal mass added with concrete, even if you own a forest of wood the heat up time will inhibit your oven use.

I disagree, there will only be 2" of extra thermal mass all over, which is what FB recommend for multiple bake sessions (which is what I want to do).

On the diagonal issue, haven't had any issues on the previous oven at all- I think it's a non-issue really...

And as luck would have it - I do have a forest of firewood

But the bricks are 4" to start with so where do you get the 2" from or did you mean 2' (foot)?

I really dont give a flying fruck if your oven works or not, Im just trying to save those that follow the heart hake of doing it wrong......
