They're not joined, just dry butted together. Staggering won't make it any stronger.... Probably would look better though

The more I think about actually doing it- the less it appeals to me.

I have some spare bricks. I think I will grind it first, and if I still not happy, I'll cut it out. But I'll definitely try grinding it first...

Yeah me too!- all down to the plans.

Can't wait to see it covered in flames

So the strength will be dependent on the concrete cladding over the top, if the vaults are not in bond? Staggered joints certainly would make it stronger.
I'm sure it won't fall down, many kilns are built with dry stacked bricks and operate ok, but the cladding over the top is likely to exceed 300C so the Portland is likely to pack it in. Thick reo also expands more than the surrounding refractory when heated fast, further weakening the cladding layer. I'm not trying to tell you it won't work, I'm sure it will, but you have a few design features that seem to me to be contrary to some established principles. When others see your beautiful finished oven they will want to follow your build.

The cladding concrete recipe uses just as much lime as cement, and this acts at the binder once the cement burns out- same principle as the home brew mortar recipe...

The 4 individual vaults are not joined, but each vault has the bricks mortared with home brew mortar.

It's strong enough to stand on

Yes, I use the same brew, but there is little strength in a lime based concrete, particularly when conductive, hotter steel expands inside the cladding layer.

Yes- but it's non-structural it only has to support itself...

So if you don't want strength in the cladding layer why add reinforcement to it?

Dunno- because the plans say to?

I'll probably leave it out of the vault roof.

What's to go on the top? You know the outer roof of the oven. Perhaps the steel could be use there.

Re: Modified 3G Masterly Tail Build

I think you do need some reinforcement in your cladding layer because the vaults are independent of each other, but thick reo is not suitable. The usual practice for refractory reinforcement is stainless steel needles because they can dissipate the extra heat they attract, to the surrounding refractory without causing the stresses of differing expansion rates. They are however, quite expensive, but you could use normal steel fibres, of which there are many to choose from. This of course is only my opinion and if you are following a plan from someone else, then presumably it has been tried and tested and proved effective.

The vaults in themselves are quite strong.
This is the second vault oven I have built from these plans.
The first one is slightly different, but still going strong after 5 years.

The outside of the oven will be a corrugated iron roof to match the shearing shed you can see in the background in some of the pics.

I still have to make a prep bench to the right (or left) of the oven and so the reo won't go to waste

Finally got the vault finished this weekend.

I ended up leaving the problem brick on the inside and just decided to live with it.

The opening didn't come out as nice as i had hoped, as I had to rush it. But it looks ok.

And yes - it VERY foggy on Saturday.
