Re: 42" build in Central Texas
don't bother grinding that yet. I can see from your pic that your fire is pretty smoky. As Tscar says, the smoke will stop after a few minutes - but only if the fire is really going. I can see the fire in the pic is @ the state where there is a visible line of smoke going out on top, air coming in on bottom. When you get a little farther on curing and can get the fire really going, I think you won't have a problem.

Normally, it smokes for 5-10 minutes, then there is no more visible smoke.

Re: 42" build in Central Texas
Are you going to go higher on the vent. I think that would help more than grinding the brick. And yes, as it gets hotter the smoke is reduced a lot.

Re: 42" build in Central Texas
Am I correct in thinking that once I get to cooking temps, I wont have as much smoke? Im just doing 300-400 degree curing fires now.
If there is little or no wind it sucks the smoke right up the stack but if a gust of air disturbs the rhythm them I get smoke out the arch.
I do think I'll grind off a little more entry left and right sides where u can maybe see where I tried to mark it with a bad Sharpie
Thanks for the compliments and encouragement guys!

Your draw should improve slightly when you install the decorative arch.

Re: 42" build in Central Texas
You have a beautiful oven, Doug. There are some owls around here, if you go out right at dusk you should see them stretching their wings for the night.

Re: 42" build in Central Texas
Ok,,,, I was reading the thread on oven curing and thought why am I sitting here??, lets knock the first one out! So I grabbed a couple of shoe boxes and a small piece of oak and an Aim-A-Flame!
Ive had a heat lamp in it for 3-4 days and the outside has been warm to the touch. I saw 300 briefly but 200 consistently for 15 minutes or so.
It's hard to tell how it draws, alot of smoke because Im burning cardboard. Seems like 70% goes up the stack and the rest out the front. If it comes down to it, I can grind out a little more of my opening.
LOTS of smoke! (I dont think my Owl is going to be happy up there)

Re: 42" build in Central Texas
They're beautiful animals, your lucky to have one that close to your house
Their call is very haunting, i picture them in a dim and cold graveyard at night.
Got to love nature's own way of dealing with disguise:

Re: 42" build in Central Texas
Check out my resident OWL whoooo lives right above the WFO. I put up an Owl box about 3 years ago and earlier this year one finally appeared!
Its an Eastern Screech Owl.
I have gotten some cool photos of her from my bathroom window which is about 10 feet from the box.

Re: 42" build in Central Texas
Got the vent completed this afternoon. I used Split bricks to finish up, very EZ to work with. Now that Im done with Firebrick I'll be moving on the Hearth to get it up to grade for Granite or whatever I come up with. Suggestions welcome.....
Then, I guess Insulation and structure.
How many boxes of 1" 50sq-ft Insulating Blanket will I need to get at least 3"? I have almost 2 full boxes now.
