I really think that the seam between the granite and floor will be OK. Between my overhang, a small slope on the granite and a good heat resistant silicone/caulk in the 1" seam, i'll be fine. Just fired it up for another day of 300-400

Wait a minute...when you say seam, are you referring to the bed joint?


I thought you were talking about the surface seam between the granite and the floor brick of the vent area. Yep, caulk only for a bed joint is fine.

I'm sure your joint will be fine too...my suggestion had more to do with aesthetics than necessity.

I think it would look better than caulk ..but it doesn't matter what I think.

Looking good. You've made a lot of progress. I am planning a very similar landing to what you are doing, but haven't gotten to it yet. The weather is starting to get iffy so I will probably have to hold off on the pour until spring. My roof extends beyond the front of the oven enough to keep rain off, but blowing snow may cause some problems so I have to do something to keep things dry until spring.

Cracks
I know that cracks are normal and its practically impossible to heat a masonry product up to 500-900, and have it not crack. Just want to describe mine and see if it seems normal.
Looking from the outside: There is one hairline crack that goes almost all the way around the dome on a plane even with the base of the chimney and a couple of verticals that go up to the circular one. I can see a couple places where it "zigs" around a brick or two. They get slightly larger than a human hair at the highest heat level Ive been to, which is about 500. Higher Im sure when the flame was near a wall. Ive move the fire around to spread heat out. I dont see anything on the inside yet but will examine closer today.

On my oven, before I closed everything in, I did a final mix of slurry to cover all visible cracks. Now that it is closed I neither know nor care if there are any hairline cracks!

If I strain I think I can see some small cracks inside - but after several months of firings nothing is getting worse so I also put those in the "don't care" category!

I thought about that but it just seems that it would crack again right there where there movement is. Im going to Insulate the dog out of it and not give it much more thought.

Those are shrinkage cracks and are meaningless.
