Re: Begining 36" oven in the Missouri Ozarks

i appreciate the kind words. We were beyond happy how the roof turned out and very lucky to have stumbled onto reclaimed slate. My wife helped me do the roof and all told we had around $200 into it due to the slates only costing a $1 a piece.

I started in May of 2013 and took a winter break in the begining of september so i'm now over a year in and still have another month or so of work. then I scored all of this free counter top which created a cool penninsula but now i need a brick or concrete patio for it to make sence........ Can you say "next year"?

Re: Begining 36" oven in the Missouri Ozarks

We have finally finished the stone work on our forno. The oven is 99% finished. I still need to tuck point the stones and make a door for the right side storage area. But, for now I need to get on to a few other more time sensitive projects. This one is at a stopping point until fall. I love cooking with this oven, it's a lot of fun. Since I have a lot of hickory firewood I have also been making charcoal in it for my green egg. Bonus free charcoal!

I want to thank again everyone who has posted on this great forum, everyone who has asked a question, and everyone who has answered those questions. I did not need to ask many questions as most had already been asked and answered long before I began my build. This project would have been almost impossible without the generous people here. THANK YOU EVERYONE, and thank you Frono Bravo for hosting this forum.

Very well done. I like the pattern on the backside. That roof ought to keep rain from getting any where near the opening. good job!

Great job on your finish Bob, love the stone work. My sentiments exactly on the Forum, I would never have gotten mine off the ground without it!

Beautiful job on the oven. Great job on the stonework details. The oven will perform great and hope you have more "ozark" inquiries about your oven on the forum. They will be quite jealous of the quality of your work.

My wife has some property in the SW section of MO. What part of the ozarks are you?

                thanks...jon

Re: Begining 36" oven in the Missouri Ozarks

kanoer54, I live just outside of Springfield. I have had several people ask if I would build one for them. My reply has been that they are on permanent back order status.

Garner, I wanted to add a strong horizontal element to the oven. They mostly seem a little tall for the width to my eye. That is the reason for the low slope roof and relatively large overhangs. I also wanted to be able to stand in front of the oven in the rain and cook a pizza without getting wet I have cooked several pizzas in the rain and there is just enough room to keep from getting wet.

One thing that I have not seen posted very much is total cost for peoples build. I will have $3,750 invested in this oven. The only thing I would have done different is put more insulation under my oven. I have 2" of FB board, and wish I would have added another 1" at least. (I actually ordered it from FB to support them for providing this forum) It would added very little to the total cost of the oven. I have 5" of blanket on the dome, the result of a math error. It has been a long tome since high school geometry.

Bob, had to chuckle at your comment about the permanent back order status. Even thou we are retired, it is hard to find enough hours in the day to get everything done on the honey do list.

My wife has 67 acres of forested property with a small house/cabin down near Cassville on hwy 248. We (more me than we) will be building another oven down on her land this winter. We are still contemplating whether to go with stone veneer similar to yours or a stuccoed dome.

Nice touch with the kerosene lantern on the side of the oven. Again....beautiful stone work and congratulations on a job well done. You will enjoy the oven for many, many years.

Good point Bob, I don't think I've seen anyone post their build price before. I think its important information for anyone starting a build to give them a idea of what they are getting into.

Before I started mine, I looked at a completely prefab'd unit that arrives at your home on a Semi with a three wheeled rough terrain fork lift that will place it in your yard where you wanted it. I recall the price being just shy of $8,000 USD and it looked cheap and chezzy.

I was worried I couldn't build a WFO on my own but I got the right info here and pressed on thinking I can build one hell of a oven for $8k. I currently have invested around $5,000 and I am about 95% done with 99% of material cost in. If i would have used something other than copper for my soffit, facia, drip edge and ridge cap I could have reduced that by at least $1,000. Having said that I'm certain I could have cut a lot of other corners and saved a pile but I wanted it to be beautiful as well as functional.

When I get a chance I will start a new thread asking builders to post their costs to enlighten the yet to builders.

The cost of an oven shows up periodically. I have seem all extremes from cheap to over the top. Here is one of the links that shows what people have spent in the past. For me I am around $3000 but $900 of that was for copper sheathing. But I also repurpose or used a lot of surplus materials, hence the 3 year plus build time.

Yes, there a bunch of threads on total cost. Interesting that there is no "master" thread. Maybe a sticky would help!

This is the one I posted in: http://www.fornobravo.com/forum/f8/t...ost-19180.html

I'm into the oven for about $4000-4500. That's dome + housing + finishing. If I add the BBQ area and assorted stainless bits, that jumps to about $8k. If I add all the other stuff I did to make it happen (retaining wall, patio, fencing, landscaping, lighting) then I no longer wish to talk about it!

I'm just under $2,800 for my oven, rock, brick patio extension, HF 10 inch wet saw, blades, etc. This does not include the alcohol consumed while building the oven. The precast sewer pipes saved me a lot of money and time.

Good thread subject. I am still in the process, so I have no answer yet. I have stashed all my material receipts into a folder and haven't worked up the nerve to add it up yet. Maybe I'll wait until I'm done. And maybe go from this to this
