Here are a few photos of my insulating slab after it was uncovered. I have since removed the forms and am giving it ample time to get some sun and air, to help drive out all the moisture I can before laying my floor bricks.
I have all the forms off and the insulating slab is getting nice and dry. A soon as my time permits, I plan to start on the hearth brick. Here's a few photos.
I worked a bit on finishing off my base w/the stamped concrete look. It needs to dry a bit for a few days, then it will get two coats of sealer. I also laid up another course of block, laid my floor bricks, then capped off my existing perlcrete layer w/another inch or so, right up to the edge of my floor bricks. I think I have a bit of trimming to do on a few of the bricks, as they are too close to the block wall for my liking. I'll take my angle grinder to a few of them later, after some weight is on the bricks. Just for the fun of it, I poured some loose perlite in the block cells. I need to build my oven arch template, then I'll be ready to sling some mud.
Thanks. Yes, I am. I had to finish the base so I can also start on the stone veneer. It's hard to finish the base w/the stone on the ledge. When I have just a little time in the evenings, I can set a few stone, instead of having to set up, then clean my saw. If I set it up, I want to be able to work on the oven for awhile. This way, I can make progress on both as I go. Next time I set it up, I'll cut a course or so of bricks. As you can see in one of the photos, I have my arch bricks cut and ready. The progress won't be fast, but it will be steady.
I have been trying to get all the work on and around the base done, so I can grade around it, do some planting, etc. I went ahead and poured the small step in front also, so I can grade that area, too. Hopefully the weather will improve soon, I can get some free time and get back to work on the oven. Here are the latest pics.
Looking good NCMan, I'm loving the stamped concrete awesome job.
This probably a dumb comment and I'm sure you have thought about it. But it looks like you won't have room for the vent area on your upper slab. Will you be use a metal chimney or masonry style? Just curious what your plan is for that area.

No, it's a good question. After I finish w/the oven, I will do a brick arch in the front, then I have about 16" more room in the front for my vent and landing area. If you notice where the foundation is laid in the front, you may be able to see the extra room. I just didn't want to pour the hearth slab all at once. For two reasons, actually. One, it gives me more room to work while building the oven. And two, it gives me a structural construction joint in the slabs, where the oven entry and the vent area meet. It's just my way of doing it. Hope that helps explain your question. Oh, I will be doing a masonry chimney.
Thanks, ncsmoker. I hope to get more time shortly to spend on it. I see you are turning out some fine food from yours. Nice to see you enjoying it so much.
