  • 42" Pompeii in Paso Robles Ca.

    Hey everyone,
After a lot of research and preparation, I have finally started my build. My slab will be 73 x 120".

The design will be large enough for a 3 foot entry to the oven with 2 Pillars that will be 2x2 foot and 32" tall. These will serve as work spaces and allow you to put things down to cook with etc. The reason for the wings that you see on the slab photo are to house the pillars that will be in the entry to the oven.

I am using Allan Block "Courtyard" series. This will be a tumbled block that will be pre-fabricated. My research proved that not only would this match a 190' wall that I currently have in my landscaping, it is actually cheaper than going with a Concrete Blocks and then putting on a nice veneer.

I did a lot of digging where my slab will be 5-5.5" with 4" of Sand.

I will be posting pics of the Indespensible Tool that I also put together this weekend.
Now for some wine and probably a snooze...

Good luck with the build. The wife and I were down your way a few months ago - great place to live! Fell in love with Doce Robles, very small, very friendly, and pretty good grapes!

There is a lot to like here, if you are a wine drinker. I spent time in Carson City as a kid. My mom worked at the Ormsby House. I remember it pretty well and get back there for a visit here and there....

We loved the Carson City museum when we were kids. lol.

I will post more pics as I go.

Beer too! Although we just missed the last brewery tour of the day, my brother and I managed to sample a few of the beers at the Firestone Brewery a few years back while returning from the inaugural Forno Bravo Expo. My wife and I also stumbled across the Firestone Brewery Restaurant on the way home from a swim meet and had a wonderful lunch that came out of their gorgeous wood-fired oven.

Good-looking start to your build. Will be looking for pics.

Ditto what Russell said. Also, getting those stobs and kickers down to just below the top of the form, will make for a much eaiser and safer pour .

The pictures will be getting more interesting as I go.
I am going to do this in two pours starting next weekend. I am going to use a colored concrete that will match the stamped concrete that I already have in place.

The plan is to do pour number one next weekend, then after that the tumbled block will go down. There will be two pillars in the entry that will be 2'x2' with a 2'2" cap on top. I am considering using an edge stamp on both edges around the oven.

Pour number two will be colored concrete to match the base and will be for the top and the cap to the pillars. - This will be done in one effort - So I will have some pretty creative forms.

The entry way pillars will be capped to provide a workspace for cooking and serve as holders for fine Paso Robles wine haha.

Does anyone have experience with using a product like this?

                      Concept 2

The roof would be a full roof to block rain etc.

Need to emphasize what Gulf mentioned. If you don't you will have one hell of a time screeding the pour.

And, falling on one of those could be a life changing experience . I like the concept drawings of your oven and roof. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished production. Is there going to be a slope on the dove tail at the front of your roof line?

I will cut the kickers yes. So thanks for that.
Also the roof concept is not well planned. Whether I have that front piece sloped that way or not, I am not sure. If it is done like that, it will all slope backward so as to not drop water down etc.
