  • 42" Build Underway in Central Alabama

I've already posted several times asking questions...many thanks to those who have graciously replied with valuable information based on their skills and experiences.

I wanted to go ahead and start a thread for my photos - and maybe if someone here has advice, a better idea, or any other comment, they'll chime in.

We have three teenagers, and so far this has been a great family project. Everyone has pitched in and helped.

I don't plan on doing anything fancy. The oven will have a two-level counter to one side (using granite scrap slabs). I plan to build a small (10'x16') pavilion style shelter in front of the oven, with a shed roof off the back covering the oven and counter tops. I also plan to run water and electricity - although not sure when that will happen.

I really like the under-stand drawer that I've seen on several builds (i.e. Gulf), and will probably do something like that. Will also probably incorporate some LED strip and flood lighting...strips for the counters and floods for the front of the oven.

Above photo is me leveling the ground for the slabs. As we are at the Southern terminus of the Appalachians, there is not much level ground around here.

Ready to pour...funny how it doesn't look level, but it is!

Block stand with at least every other core poured with re-bar and concrete. Note the stainless steel 2" x 2" x 1/4" angle iron...it was a gift from my brother.

Block and slab sealed and ready for French Drain and back fill. Ground will be sloped away from block on all sides. That is my 17 year old son (the oldest of our three teenagers) on the Kubota.

We have an earthquake about once every 20 years...but they are always minor.

6 mil plastic sheeting over sealant - and fabric sock over corrugated pipe. Soil beneath pipe has been sloped for directional drainage and tamped.

Additional layer of fabric covering corrugated pipe.

Backfill sloped away from block stand.

Back filled, sloped, tamped and covered with straw - all thanks to my wife and son!

Starting to build supports for hearth form...and spreading sand for pavers.

Testing paver fit and pattern. Note red oak firewood stacked in the background - just waiting to warm a Pompeii oven!
