  • First curing fire today. Using my turkey fryer for a controlled heat, didnt want the flame licking the dome yet.
Took 2.5 hours to get 250° . Held it at 200° for 4 hours today, will continue the same tomorrow.

    • I also used that same adapter. Man, I need to get some insulation on mine so I can start some curing fires.

      • Saluki, we both are anxious and want to get some pies cooking in theses babies. I'm not sure if í will go to full curing temp as í dont have any blanket insulation on my dome yet, so many different opinions on this forum for and without insulation when curing the oven.

        • I would be very careful of that gas line in the oven. That rubber hose will be at the same temp as your internal oven

          • I think that both camps for the "drying" fires of before and after insulation are right. It is just that the before takes a litle more slower ramp up of temps. The cooler the weather without insulation, the slower the ramp up.

            Just sayin' .

            • What's the hottest temp you can get without insulation on? I am trying to figure out if I can make a deadline for a 4th of July party if I don't have a structure to protect the insulation!

              • Guys thanks for chiming in. William thanks for your concern on the hose, í just got my class A pipe delivery so today í will start curing with wood.

Yeager I too would like to be at full cooking temp for the 4th of July. Hopefully more experienced members will chime in. I'm sure many builders were also asking this same question. Good luck.

                  • I don't think insulation has anything to do with high temp, I think it just helps maintain the heat itself, after firing the oven.

                    • very nice Ivan!! is this the quickest build on the site? good job.
i just posted on my build's thread about getting the same supervent from menards. i dont live near, so i'll ship it. seems to be half the price of duravent.

                      • Saluki is correct. Insulation doesn't have MUCH of anything to do with the high temp. What the insulation does is ALLOW you to get the higher temp faster since you are not heating up areas that are acting like a heat sink. In addition it will maintain the heat longer, at least in the dome area.

                        • Started 3rd day of curing with pine kindling holding temps at 300°-350°. Might be giving Menards a call cause my 36" pipe was all banged up right out of the box. They also forgot my rain cap. Guys thanks for chiming. Ivan

                          • Ivan, will the dents in your pipe still be visible when you build your enclosure? I ask because it took three shipments to get a pipe that only had small dents, and they were triple bubble wrapping them and the shippers still managed to dent them (or they were dented in the warehouse). The one I am going to use had small dents in the back, which won't be visible when I get my walls up. If you order a new one it may be worse than what you have now, and you will be like me - stuck with some dented pipe you don't know what to do with.

                            • JR, I think the dented pipe will be ok, wont see the dents after my enclosure is up but still not happy about it. The worst part was the flange that connects to the supervent was out of round so I had to shape it with a rubber hammer. Still waiting on my rain cap. All else is progressing nicely, slow and steady with the curing heat.
                              Thanks
                              Ivan.

                              • I'd at least try to get a discount on it... Stuff is expensive! Mine got to me ok but the raincap was smashed flat.
