  • Re: Elizabeth's oven

    Elizabeth, you have my sympathies.
We had a freak dump of snow too, a few weeks ago ... but it melted!
Then we got a very light dusting today and we'll likely see more in the next week.
I had wanted to finish my stand but I'm on hold too - darn!

I was just complaining about the temps here in Tampa right now; it's a balmy 37 degrees ...Then I see what you are experiencing and felt kind of silly. I don't care what anyone says, snow sucks unless you can actually get out and enjoy it.

Good news is that it will melt!

      Stay warm.

Yeah, staying warm will be the problem for the next few days- it's forecast to have lows in the teens. In November. In Virginia. Mountains be darned, they aren't that big anyway! This is all wrong!

And I'm supposed to go to a football game Saturday night, too. I guess the cold weather gear I wear to the barn will have to go in the wash so I don't stink up the stadium... (but I might get a little more elbow room that way!)

Will it hurt the oven to use it while it's this cold?

I'd start with an itty bitty fire to warm it up slowly. For fresh pizza, I'd have to risk firing it up!!!!

I fired my oven up all through the last Winter without any problems.

I must say, your oven looks really pretty in all that snow!

Hi Elisabeth did you see any cracks on the inside of the oven if so how did you deal with them, I had a few maybe I fired it too fast (was eager to have pizza)I patched them with heat stop but I,ve seen a high heat joint compound tha is used for kiln ovens I need to fill some other small cracksI wonder if its any good ,Anybody out there know?

I do have a few cracks inside. I haven't done anything to them. They're quite narrow (a little wider when it's hot) and I don't worry about them. Cracks happen. Mine all follow mortar joints, they aren't splitting bricks, and I think they're quite normal. I also have a crack up the front facade- but it's nearly closed when the oven is cold, so it's another expansion crack. That one I will patch on the outside when the weather's a bit less gross with some elastomeric patching compound. That stuff stretches across cracks so it won't really make it go away, just make it not show and keep moisture out.

Unless you have a crack in a really bad spot, like the arch, I wouldn't do anything about them. Even in the arch I am not sure a single crack is a real problem- but more than one might be. Look at asudavew's thread- he had a problem with his arch.

Pictures might help us figure out if you need to worry or not...

Elizabeth, your oven looks so pretty, in the snow or out! I'm hoping for snow this year, but I'm in Asheville so we've pretty much forgotten what snow feels like. It was cold yesterday, but today it's like 50 and drizzley. I can't wait to use my oven in the cold, though. It's a reason to get outside.

Amber, I'd mail you a snow ball if I could.

You'll have to settle for a photo. This is out my back door this afternoon. And it's not even winter yet.

I just wish we could get snow at appropriate times. We seem to be unable to get snow at Christmas... just times like before Thanksgiving and in March. Or April. The rest of the time we get nasty cold rain, it seems. Like today. It's a gross grey day here.

Well here on the other side of the planet it's 27 C (80 F) and 65% humidity -quite unpleasant
