Re: My 3-Legged Dome
I did not get much work done this week as I'm waiting for the rest of my chimney components to arrive. I should get them today.
Yesterday I narrowed the outer entry width by 3" and did a little cosmetic touch up surrounding the entry.

Curious as to why you are doing it that way.
Aesthetics ?
To get the stack back out of the way ?
A more ideal solution is to locate the stack way back in the corner of the nook, at the rear of the oven, but I did not like some of the drawings I did on that design.

Re: My 3-Legged Dome
Thanks turkey. Yes, the oven will have a central stack, the only difference being mine will be routed to the middle with a steep stove pipe before elbowing out the top.

Re: My 3-Legged Dome
looking very nice, thoes casts look as good if not better to the commercial ones
when you say the chimney will come right out the middle do you mean like here
MHA News - 2006 Meeting - Backyard Oven with Peter Moore
where the vent at the front then runs back over the top with a central chimney stack?

Re: My 3-Legged Dome
Thank you Dino and leckig.
The clay sculpting and ceramics classes I took in community college many many years ago certainly helped make casting the vent an easy task.
The round front profile and the very shallow entry of the oven have been slowing me down at this stage. Also, I will be making some changes to the outer entry as I feel it is a bit too splayed/flared out. I intend to bring them in a bit, but not affect the inner opening.

Re: My 3-Legged Dome
Burn the Dominos box! Yah .
George, you make casting a vent look easy. It really doesn't seem that much harder than cutting lots of brick or clay pipe or even fitting metal pipe. It's a good option that can solve lots of problems. Glad you did it.

First fire and smoke test
I burnt a Dominos pizza box this evening to check for smoke, running a temporary 48" stove pipe. The vent drew well with this small fire. But of course, I have no idea yet how well it will vent with a roaring fire.

Re: My 3-Legged Dome
Mounted the vent.
As you can see in one of the photos I placed a piece of left over 3" ceramic board and some temporary bricks on the top of the dome to see if they'll work as support for the chimney pipe. The pipe and the support will all be buried in vermicrete.
The chimney will exit straight out middle of the dome.

They are used in heating ,ventilation and air conditioning ducts. Look up HVAC on your local business directories.

Re: My 3-Legged Dome
Neil, I looked for that exact vent but couldn't find it anywhere. If it was available to me I certainly would have gone that route instead of casting one from scratch.
Where did you get yours?
George
Edit: I found the website where they have these vents in various sizes. I searched for floorboxes. My search a few weeks ago led me nowhere as I had no idea what they were called. Yes, I could have used one of these instead.Last edited by fxpose; 06-11-2010, 09:09 AM.

Re: My 3-Legged Dome
Here's my third attempt at creating the vent. What you see is the inner mold for the cast. It will be cast on my driveway where the outer mold will be held in place using cement blocks.
Instead of using 6" pipes I decided to go an inch larger and got 7" pipes and fittings (largest diameter that can fit over the vent) due to the couple of bends they need to make before exiting the middle top of the dome.
I hope to have the cast ready and mounted by the weekend.
Edit: 2nd photo shows how I set up the outer form. This is now ready for the pour.
