Re: A New Journey
Loren,
A 42" oven requires an 8" flue, and an 8" sloping flue gallery is recommended, but many builders have gone with less (read: didn't think ahead). 4" for front entryway arch, another 2" (approx) for decorative arch and cladding. Any plans for a small landing counter to match the kitchen?
You have the room to back your oven up so go ahead and make whatever adjustments you need to get the look and finish you want. A few more inches of depth are not critical to working the fire/pots/pizza. (Just think of your buddy's behemoth) You also gain the benefit of a wind break and larger warming/holding area with a deeper entryway.

Re: A New Journey
I do have one question that I have been thinking about. Do I have enough distance from the front of the hearth to where my inner arch will be? I have about 1' from the very edge to the outside of the inner arch. I think that should be plenty for my mounting plate and the outside arch. Or should I re-lay my floor another 6"-12" back? My thoughts were that the back of the oven would be 4'6" and anything further than say 5' would be more difficult to get at. Any other thoughts? Should I just leave it as is?

Re: A New Journey
Thanks John. Yeah. I think I'll just start embedding them from my G+ album so the flow is a little better and people can just scroll through them.

Hey Loren,
Your pic file size appears to be way to big. See if you can't reduce them to around 1Mb (or less) prior to loading and they'll load just fine. They'll be easier to look at too.
Nice progress, BTW.

Re: A New Journey
Made some good progress on the WFO with this great weather and now that I have the city's green light finally, I hope to make a lot of progress over the next few weeks! Lets hope for good weather.
This week I...
1. Completed demo work of old pizza location
2. Repaired rear center of structure
3. Made forms for new countertop pour
4. Poured the new counter
5. Removed forms
6. Removed Insulating brick and firebrick from storage location
7. Cleaned Insulating brick and firebrick
8. Created new templates for the floor (oven is now 42") and for use of the IT
9. Layed the Insulating brick floor
10. Layed the Firebrick floor
11. Cut and placed first course of the dome
12. Spring cleaning of the structure and getting ready for the build!
Can't wait to get cooking!

Re: A New Journey
So about 2 weeks after my last post I was laid off from work and Winter came along so there was no progress even though the excitement about the build was there. We've been having great weather as of late here in Utah so I've been making some progress on the Demo and oven. Hopefully weather stays good so I can continue making progress. I'll add pictures and more description tomorrow.

Re: A New Journey
Extra!!! Extra!!! Read all about it
Talked with one of the City Planner's today and they are going to give me a variance and provide me with a building permit to continue on the oven as proof that the city approves the location of the oven. Finally after over 6 months I'll be able to start back up with this project.
The less fortunate thing about it is that the structure is over the property line so I will have to make a few modifications and re-locate the placement of the oven. I'll also be making a smaller oven since I have to re-locate. I don't see this as a huge deal since it will heat quicker and hopefully hold heat better. I'll be going with a 36" oven instead of the 48" I had previously planned. I'll post up some pictures here soon of the future layout and plan and I'm sure I'll be back to my question asking self soon.
I just have to make a demolition adjustment to the current structure by cutting the middle back section off and then re-supporting with block in the back to close it off. Then the next step will be to pour the new top for where the pizza oven will sit. Then I'm back to where I was when I was stopped back in March.
Added a very rough sketch up drawing of my idea for the new oven. Anyway... I hope to be more involved here again at the latest in the spring since I may have to hold out the build till the snow melts... we'll see.1 Photo

Re: A New Journey
Well Yesterday I got together with a neighbor of mine who was wanting to build an oven on his own. I was scanning the classifieds 2 months back and found a WFO which used to be in a restaurant for 1500. Suggested it to him and he bought it. Yesterday was the first day he fired it up. It got upwards of about 1100 degrees but didn't hold that heat since he doesn't have it insulated or anything but the oven was in two pieces. Thought I would share its design since it is a unique oven. All of the bricks are fixed on the inside and only the floor needed to be lied down. It is a very large oven about 5'x5'. It made me jealous that my oven wasn't done yet. But then again all he had to do was bring this to his house and get it assembled with a mini-X.2 Photos

Re: A New Journey
Your planter boxes look great. Hope your moving goes well. If you haven't started already have you thought of maybe a house moving service to jack and move your project? I don't know what that cost would be but for sure they could move your project exactly where you want it to be. Saw on Discovery Channel where a company jacked up a brick lighthouse and moved it back hundreds of feet to save it and it came out perfect.
Congratulations to you and your wife on your new one and best wishes!!
Jim

I understand. I hope it all goes well for you.Originally posted by the_dr_masuess View PostThanks everyone for the good wishes!
I would like to move it all at once but I don't think it will be possible. It weighs at a minimum 15000 lbs (the Slab is about 3 yards of concrete= 12000 lbs, the cinder block=3000+lbs and the counter slab which the oven will sit on and filled cores= 4000 lbs before water weight.) It would be difficult to lift and move all at once at close to 20000 lbs.

If that's not doable, then do what you need to do. Also, try to have a nice, firm level new base for it. Also, congrats on the little one.Last edited by the_dr_masuess; 05-23-2014, 06:54 AM.
