Yes maybe he will shed a bit more light on it for me I really don't mind the work it's going take to rebuild it if it comes to it I can't really fire it up yet either to test as my temporary roof is plastic and the weather here at the min would not like my bare firebrick dome torrential

My oven?s throat was also designed to help carry the weight of a firebrick lined chimney/flu around the double outside arches to the vcrete layer. In a recent discussion on another thread, Stonecutter commented that he thought that it was the reason that my oven drew real well. (My 44" oven has only, roughly, a square 8? X 7 ?? ID brick liner) That may be the case, but I really think that the "double outside arches" may also be the key to this.

A recent example (without the massive throat) is SteelandStone?s double outside arch design. The "double outside arch" makes the smoke jump up a full 4" before it can exit the outside (outside arch). I'm looking forward to see how his works out .

I have to agree with NCman, Gulf and the others about the width of the vent area being the key factor. My vent area is only 8" deep inside but it is 20" wide and 12"tall and I get no smoke out the front. I can only tell you what my personal experience is with my oven as I have not seen anyone else's in person to compare it to.

G'day
Having a square entrance and 8 in flues are rarer than rocking horse poo in the sub tropics means my oven has a wide vent area. In fact the entrance is 18 in wide and the vent above is 20 ins wide and 5 ins deep. The chimney widens to 22 ins and another 1/2 in in width.
Near zero smoke can be achieved by lighting a top down fire under the chimney then pushing the hot fire into the cold oven. The neighbors can smell the smoke but can't see it.
One disadvantage is with a short chimney is that on a windy day sometimes the wind will push the hot air down the chimney and disrupt the oven breathing but that's a rarity.
If I built again even with an arched entrance to my oven I'd make the vent as wide if possible and no less than 3/4 of the width if I had to.

That's it then I'm going to get the sthil saw out and chop a few course away I've just ordered another 25kg bag of cement fondue to re-construct it for a wider opening it makes sense listening to all your comments I am having a long chimney around 4 ft high so with a wider vent I should also be smoke free last thing I really want is all my face arch smoke stained. I might get chance this afternoon to cut it down all depends on this concrete wagon turns up on time at work hmmm we'll see thanks for all your input guys

Hey hey the concrete turned up on time so I got home early and got out the saw 20 mins later and I'm ready to go again this is going to leave me with a new vent size of 8 ins by 19.1/2 inch well worth the time I think. shouldn't take long to put back up neither cement should be here in 2 days or so really glad I've done it now

While I was out there with the saw I thought I would cut a new set of bricks in wedges looks a lot better than the last one and should be stronger the back arch bricks I cut narrower than the last time so the vent ended up 9 inch not 8

I am not quite to the point of constructing my entryway/vent area so I look forward to how the redesign works out!

Lee......I think you'll be glad you did what you did later on......some builders don't mind some smoke out the front, some do. You did the right thing, since it was important to you to have it the way you wanted. Best of luck w/it.

cement arrived today so i got the arch re-done, the vent opening is hudge now 20" x9" im alot more happy with it. hopefully figure some sort of transition out tomorrow so proberly loads of head scraching and cutting for the day ive seen a few ideas on here not really sure which route to take might even fashion something up myself.i was going to go for a clay flue pipe but after looking at them arches i think i will use a twin wall for the lightness and just encase it with my face bricks and top off with a small clay pot sat on the inside of the face brick could only fine 1 brand of anchor plate for a 8" twin wall here in england but it looks like the dura vent 8" TWIN WALL Anchor Plate (8STC-AP) | eBay

Lee....you are right, that vent is huge. It should draw good. You'll be glad you changed it, I'm sure. Great looking work, by the way.

thanks ncman and steel i got a few cut for the transition today dry laid them out so i know where im going with it . i dont have an anchor plate as yet so i got the sizes from a pdf file on the one im going to buy tomorrow so might wait to lay the bricks until it comes just to be safe it fits. so i started with centered hole size at the top of my vent height and drew a pencil line from that point to the vent start as shown here i cut the top bricks befor i took the pic

the next cut i used is something ive seen on here before not really sure what its called some sort of saddle cut seemed to be the easiest way to anchor the first course

the next cut ties into the arch just a simple wedge out the corner as deep as the arch brick off a full brick and also a half brick bringing the bricwork back in course




then back on to full bricks with just the top to cut level i will also trim down all the egdes stuck out the sides so i can have a small as possible chimney breast

Hi guys I don't know if anybody is on the forum at the min. But I'm just going to cut a circle hole out of 4 bricks for my vent anchor plate how tight a fit should I make the cut? Or should I leave a gap around it for expansion but would smoke not get trapped in there?
