I tried to read through a week's worth of posts on this thread, but just about the only comments I understood were Dave and George's...

I gather you went ahead with the big outside joints though? Good for you, I think it will work out fine! And it looks really good, its nice to be back in time to see the final rounds...

I have finished 27 of the expected 32 bricks for course 8. I have my final 5 outside my arch area where I need to address the oval concerns. If all goes well, it will be done over the next couple evenings.

The reason I likely have more bricks per upper courses is from my not lining up bricks, but rather always going center to the bricks below.

        Robert,

If you are lining the bricks up on center, they should be getting narrower in width as you ascend to the dome. The count should remain the same.

          ...or one or two less.

Wait a minute, edit in progress. Les is probably right. I shouldn't second guess a master. If you continue to downsize the bricks, it may be the same number for each row. Mine numbers went down because I went to 3 inch then two-inch-wide bricks as I closed.

Les, I believe you are right. I may go the route of using full halves, mixed with smaller ones, as long as I keep close to middle points below. I figure with 5 courses left, and the tightening of brick widths, I can do the mixture. I survey each course for advantages as I go, and hope I can do this.
What do you think? What will be your plan? You have got to be ready to get going on yours fairly quick as well?

              What will be your plan?

The way I drew it up, the bricks end up being around 5/8 inch wide (on the inside of the dome) at the finale coarse. This has to happen to keep all the bricks on center. That kinda scares the crap out of me. But at the end of the day, it shouldn't matter, it's just going to require alot more cutting. In regard to getting back to working on my oven - I use my beerometer; if I can set my beer down outside for an hour, and it's still cold enough to drink - it's to cold to work

Course 8 is done. Definitely took some adjustments above the arch to make the oval disappear. I have not done measurements or fine tuning with the grinder, but that will be done in a couple days after the mortar hardens.

I feel like the snail compared to a few supersonic builders lately, but slow and consistant will be my motto.

I want to figure a way to bring in the quantity of bricks for the next course. This will be my project too.

Every oven is different, that's one of the things that's so cool about them. And every builder has his or her own pace any style.

Its fun watching your oven take shape, especially because you seem to be enjoying it so much (frozen fingers and all ) and you're such a thoughtful and carefull builder.

                  So good motto, keep going!

5/8" Les? It is going to be great theater next spring watching you make and place those cut bricks.

Well, I have decided that the oven is tall enough to fit my little girl. She wasn't sure why she was in there, but all was good as she enjoyed the scenery.

I grinded course 8. Now I have a complete inner top brick circle at 21.75 inches from center. the top area above the arch still has a minor dip of 1" from across the way. No big, that will get adjusted with the next course. I realize I will not be able to sit inside the oven and grind any more because of the tents framing above. This made having the circle being perfect that much more important. If I have to do any more grinding, it will be leaning over

I have committed the last couple courses to .50 lift in the back, and it appears to be working. One course I angled the face, then next I did not. Course 8 had most areas leaning into a 21.5 distance, so I grinded the upper bricks of those to create a lesser angle to the brick for the next course. I will find out on 9.

I want to center the bricks but like I stated before, I may deviate from that for a course to bring the quantity down, I am not sure.

She's a sweety! I just hope she didn't think she was auditioning for Hansel and Gretel or anything... no no, she doesn't look as if she did.

That photo is really really lovely, thank you for posting it!

How's the oven progressing this weekend? Too busy to tell us, or stuck for some reason?
