  • Too bad that Menards is only local to MN/WI, but unfortunately they don't have the vent adapter and spark arrestor available in stores, but I could pick through everything else and find stuff that was nice.

    • Thomas, do you need just the spark arrestor or the entire rain cap? I ordered my cap without the arrestor, but reading the description and looking at the picture I am going to make one using the left-over stucco mesh I have. The arrestor is over $10, but you can get around 16 ft^2 of lath for around $7 at the hardware store. If the Menards one was stainless I might buy it, but it is galvanized steel (like the mesh), so a little re-purposing is in order ;-) After typing all this I see there are stainless ones available, but Menards says galvanized.

      • I agree on the DIY spark arrestor. I paid something like $15 for the Duravent arrestor, only to find it's just a little roll of ½" stainless hardware cloth. I had bundles of that sitting around already.

You definitely need the rain cap. I haven't put a spark arrestor on there yet and will probably make my own as well.

          • The good news is í was able to clear my oven dome with the last firing, bad news is í have a large crack from the soldier brick half way up my dome side. Cooked my first pizza and it was awesome.

            • Bad crack from last firing, my impatience got the oven too hot while clearing the dome. Please guys chime in if o should fix or leave it. The crack is about 1/16 to 1/8 wide and í can see the flame inside the oven.

              • You can pack some mortar in there or high heat caulk if you want to, but really it won't affect anything in the long run

                • I used the high temp caulk as I had left over from sealing up my chimney flange and my rope around the heat break, but not sure how necessary it was. My crack is right in the back, and the first time I saw it the sun was shining through it while I had a fire going. Probably about the same size as yours was. I don't know if it was impatience, not having insulation, or just where it was going to crack the first time it got hot enough, but I am probably the only one that notices it.

                  • About these cracks ... If you are doing an igloo or even dog house for that matter , wouldn't smoke escape thru there and into the next layer of insulation and get trapped by the next layer of cement/p-Crete ?? How does one address that ?

                    • Thanks Guys, í had first noticed a hair line crack after my 4th day of curing and it just kept growing from there on. I will try and grind some out and fill with homebrew. Funny how í was just thinking í had no serious cracks and then this one apeared. Very cool how the dome got cleared, í thought the black soot would never burn off.
                      Thanks again.

                      • Still waiting on Menards to ship my rain cap. Improvising with a maple sap bucket, not as nice but doing the job.

Deejayoh thanks for the advise, I found some high temp caulk at my local Lowes store, it is rated for 1200F degrees. I chipped out the loose mortar from back of 2 soldier bricks and filled the space with the caulk.
The homebrew never had a chance to bond properly to the brick surface as it came off clean from the brick.
                          thanks again.

                          • More progress on my build. I was able to put down 4" layer of ceramic blanket.

                              • More framing on roof and took a break to make 2 great pizzas, chicken bbq and a seafood pizza. Huge diffrence with the blanket on, the oven just begs to be fed.
