    Re: Justin Pompeii

Great looking job Justin i cut a expansion joint across my chimney area due to
the stainless steel flue mounting warping causing 2 cracks to run across the dome as i fired the oven.
I would only do this after all else has failed mate.
    Cheers Peter

Hi peter, how did you mount your chimney? i have a 6inch ID/ 8 inch OD chimney with a cowl, but no good way to secure it at the bottom.

I left an expansion space in mine, just to be sure.

Heres the latest progress photo. Things haven't progressed as fast as i had wished, but it does feel good to begin the dome section. i hope to make a couple of extra courses this weekend.

Bill is right, once you get to the dome, things really begin to fly! Good luck!

This looks to be another A++ oven!!! Get plenty of exercise because a finished oven is good for about a ten to fifteen pound gain!!!

                    Hello Justin,

Careful with that opening form. You should put in a few wedges to lift the form slightly or you may have troble getting it out after completing the arch.

Or maybe you have done something clever there which I cannot see.

                      Re: Justin Pompeii

Good point karl, I remember after getting my form "just right"...it was about 3/16" too short, or so I thought; I remember thinking "damn it, I have to make another". For whatever reason, I did the smart thing and used shims to get it up to the right height. Just pulled out the shims the next day and out came the form. I can see someone's form becoming wedged in there, then beating it out with a mallet - cracking all of the mortar or even knocking the arch down.

Please, that's a total nightmare and nothing I want to think about while I have a form under my arch during the cure process. Great progress!

                          Re: Justin Pompeii

Thanks guys for the tip about the arch form, at the moment there is about a 3mm gap all around it so should be OK. For future courses i will use a shim as suggested as they will need to rest on the form.
And yes i will need to start another project once this is done to burn off the extra pizza calories!

I think thats my problem, i don't have a chimney plate, only the inner and outer flu. The place i got it from didn't seem to have the plates

Latest photo of progress to date. I think im ready for some smaller bricks, these half bricks are getting too hard to work with and rather untidy!
