Ok guys I only have enough fireclay to go around the perimeter of my ceramic fiber board. Is it ok to level it going around ther perimeter and not smear it across the entire hearth slab. There will some voids under my insulation board. Also I noticed some fine cracks in my board are these oK?
You should be able to just screed the mix to fill the low spots. The fine cracks in the board are no problem.
Ok since Les said to "leave it be" I figured this would be a good time to experiment with the mortar and working the brick since I really can't screw anything up since it's good to start with. I quickly found out that planning an oven with all 1/8" joints won't happen. Makes me smile when I remember reading a thread where someone wanted to build one with no gaps at all. I'm now going to plan on 1/4" joints all the way around. Hopefully I'm still leaving myself enough "wiggle" room.
Strive for the best joints you can on the inside of the dome, mortar is your friend on the outside. I strived for as tight of inside and outside joints I could get. If I were to do again I would just focus on the inside and spend my energies elsewhere.
Ok so my opening is 19" wide, 10" high on the ends and 11 1/2" at the center. Any ideas on making the form for my arch?
Also I printed out my oven opening on paper and it looks huge with those dimensions. Must be an optical illusion right.... Those dimensions are from FB ... mostly. The oven openings just look smaller in all the photos I've seen.
You want the door to also go into the opening as well as have a lip beyond it for maximum seal.
Also the part that goes into the opening should be filled with some type of. Insulating material, people have used ceramic board, blanket, and vermicrete perlite. Etc...
Ok guys so I got some more work done on my oven over the weekend. I had all of my bricks precut and as I moved along some of the bricks would fit perfectly without any mortar. I placed them with no mortar and kept moving around my dome with the next brick and so on. Is this ok to do?.... No mortar on some bricks?
