  • Re: 42" build in Central Texas

Had the morning to work on my outer Arch. It was 38 degrees with a 25 mph north wind , just so ya know

Id love some honest opinions about how you think this stone will look with the Brick. Keep in mind that my home 12' away is stone very similar to what I used here. I may clip the top right corner off so I can merge the brick better without a gap.
Tom, I went ahead and stuck the stones to both the firebrick arch and the Hardi Backer. The thinset Im using is FlexBond and is supposed to Flex a tiny bit. I figure if it cracks due to movement, I can make a repair easily

I have always like the blending of Brick and Stone on Homes. I do think its going to look fine, Not really old Italian Style but the more I look at it and picture the Brick next to it I like it. It might be tricky where the brick meets the Stone. Im thinking I will cut the brick close enough that I wont have mortar between the Brick/Stone.

I like the look and think it ties well, but it is going to give you fits to cut the brick in, and you are going to have some big mortar gaps. Do not cut brick to fit tight, it needs joints around the stone to look natural.

I would be tempted to cut it along the black line, and if you want it a tad rustic, don't cut them all exactly equal (but within a mortar joint, say 1/4-3/4), and not necessarily exactly on the arc.

This is looking like a real artisan laid up this stone and brick. Looking forward to the final photos!!! keep posting the pics.

ID:	302632, as in their Flame logo. If I keep my original design, I may drop in a couple of shaped stones in those 2 gaps on the right side so that I dont have to deal with that.
Tom, have you tried The Leaning Pear out in Wimberley? Put it on your list!

Just saw this,,, Now Im thinking I may do Hardi Board or Rough Cedar. The Metal poses some problems and once again I cant find anyone who has time for a small job like this. I dont have any experience with a Brake and honestly it doesnt appeal to me anymore. Hardi Board with a wood grain... Not going to see it

Got all the Brick Veneer done except for some around the front because I cant install the soffit until I get my lights. That has been an issue,,, finding LED recessed light that are less than 5" deep. I think I have found them but wont be here for a week. Good thing because wife and I going to the Mountains for a week.

Theres a Grimaldis Coal Fired Pizza in Reno we will hit on Tuesday! Been to the one in NYC. Hope this one is as good.

BTW, The Corsicana (Texas) Bricks have been laying around my place or my Parents place for 30-40 years. I was born there and lived there till 1975. The Brick Plant was a large employer there and we still see Corsicana Bricks in various places today. I incorporated one into my Veneer.

They hit an underground spring in Corsicana. All the equipment is still in the pit, covered by 40 foot of water.

Tried my hand at Puck Tointing, I mean Point Tucking, Whatever... you know what I mean.
This is fun, I want to go do a large building now but I'll leave the vertical joints for someone else to do .
Once I got in a rhythm and found my timing to slide and brush, it went well. I mixed the first batch too wet and its a tad sloppy, oh well, go ahead and throw me in Masonry Jail!
Cant wait to spend a whole day on it. I like the look.

edit: BTW, Tom, I had 1 brick left out of the whole order, 1 brick!

I do like old brickwork , like stonecutter said its like working with stone. Old anything , has a pantina ....., a texture, a colour , a few bumps and scratches which it collects from its life .
Your oven has a has a lot of that character, those bricks are really special. And your pointing only makes IT.
Congratulations it's not only a technically oven, but one that you have crafted to suit
                              Regards dave
                              Measure twice
                              Cut once
Fit in position with largest hammer

Thanks Dave, Im very happy with how she is coming along. Once the Pointing is done, all that left is paint on the Facia and the roof Tile which I need to go pick out. There a roof company in Austin that has a huge Boneyard of leftover Tile, etc. Maybe I can find something interesting. Not exactly sure how Im going to cap the stack.
