I'm way behind on your and everyone's progress but I'm glad I haven't missed the keystone. I see you have it cut tough - does that mean you've now completed all the rows? It looked from the pics I saw like you still had a row or two to go but maybe I missed something ... either way, won't be long now!

    Sarah
I haven't posted pictures of the last two rows yet, I spent some time Firday cleaning up the inside and making sure I got mortar squeezed into open spaces that resulted from the strange cuts in the last two rows. Either I should have made the front opening bigger or my body smaller. Turning around in it wasn't easy and I've had a sore neck all weekend. Ah, a small price to pay.
Hope the winter weather breaks for you Sarah.

Shopping ( why isn't the term buying) in Dallas and I was able to find flue liner that was 8"x8" and 2' long. I got two and hoping one will be enough. I guessing I'm going to make my arch vent area sloping into this, like an inverted oven. Now my plans are to only to use one but if there is a thread or advise from you'all I'd appreciate it.

If you have room for both of them, use them. A 48" chimney will draw MUCH better than a 24" one.

I have plenty of room, only concern is obstructing our view from the patio. After I get the first in I'll take a look. We typically get a nice breeze coming in even on still days and since nothing is close to it, I hoping it draws ok. But this is all new to me.

Thought I'd post pictures of my finally two rows, as always I've got cleanup to do. I've cut the keystone but I think I'll wait to mortar that in until I'm done with the vent. That last row was an interesting one to cut, but I may have said that many times before. On to the vent.

              Great work Rc!

I would put that keystone in before the entry and vent.

I'm not sure you will be able to get inside with them in place, and you just might need or want to.

              Just a thought.

Ya, I was thinking about that today when I was try to clean up inside. You've heard about furniture moving? I think my chest dropped down to my drawers as I've aged

Congrads RC! I know it's called a keystone, but it is really a milestone. Won't be long before you are posting pizza pics.

I, too, would set the keystone first. Then the mortar will all be about the same age when you cure.

Cool!! Lovely dome! (...and lovely lake as always)

The thing I can't understand with that keystone is

HOW CAN YOU STAND TO WAIT???

Don't know about what's more advisable, but having it sitting there, all ready to put in, a dome wating to be complete, .....its got me all jittery just thinking about it, and I'm sitting half way round the world from the dang thing!

                        SHE'S IN

I've taken your advice and the mortared the keystone in. It was hard enough getting into the oven without the vent finished, felt like going into an MRI machine.

I also did the middle section of the vent, I need to think of a way to support these two spans. I also cut the front pieces for the vent but will let the center harden first.
At first I worried how strong the mortar was when I was building the dome, but now feel that I could easily stand on it. I'm not that comfortable with the center part of the vent though. Maybe the base that I'll put the flue liner on will be the reinforcement I need. If I'm still skitish I'm not sure I will use the second two feet of flue liner given the weight.

RC, congrats. I agree with you and others about finishing the dome, keystone, cleaning it......then attacking the final arch section.

                            You win!

I wasn't quite sure what you meant by support for your vent.

                                Here how I approached mine.
