I bought a couple of gate handles at HD and screwed them to the door. Couple coats of high-temp flat black paint and the door looks all professional-like.

I am very happy with the fit. And it's only 10 pounds!

    Hey Dee,

Your new welding skills far exceed my existing skills. All of my welds I have to hide!

I think the oven being very hot and the metal door and the protected area of the flue arch all add up to heating the metal handles. Your milage may vary.

You will be surprised as to how much heat migrates to the front of the door and radiates off the front panel due to the weld connection. If or when I build my next door I will isolate the back from the front even more than I did the first time.

    Interesting. Through an insulated door?

I think the spring handles are supposed to dissapate heat. That's what they use on Smokers and Wood Stoves

I started with all metal handles and they got to hot so I changed them to wood.

You may want to try something like this but welded to the outside now that you are a certified welder.

How do you remove your hot door? Ceramic suction cups?

Not much going on for me in the oven department, but I am happy to report -

    I have a door!

I had to learn to weld in order to build this thing. Those of you with mad welding skillz may find my efforts a bit amateurish (and I would agree they are). I bought a used HF 90Amp flux welder off craigslist and went to town. With the help of my trusty grinder I was able to get the thing looking ok. here's the details

    - 16 gauge mild steel
    - 2 inches of CF blanket as insulation
    - Weight is 10 pounds, 2 oz
    - High temp thermometer sourced from our hosts. It's mounted on a 5/16" nut welded to the back of the front plate. I was pretty proud of figuring that out.
    - 1/4" of space between the door and the oven wall. I may get some CF rope to act as a gasket, we'll see how well it works.

It still needs a coat of high temp primer and high temp paint, and I need to figure out handles.

Completely unrelated to pizza ovens, but I am totally making progress on my yard transformation. I had some guys in this week and my front yard went from this:

I'm in Seattle, where everything seems to be built on a hill. I have struggled for a couple years trying to figure out what to do with that space - all the while maintaining the look of living in a hovel. I am very happy with the transformation. Going shopping for some plants tomorrow to fill in the space.

I also started cutting the metal for my oven door. 16 gauge mild steel. I plan on welding it with a two-inch deep void that I will pack with insulating blanket left over from my oven build. I ordered the high-temp thermometer from our hosts to go through the door.

Nice job on those counters and congrats on having that done. I hope to get some templates made this weekend for the door and landing. Stainless door and granite for a landing is the plan. Cant wait to see your mosaic.

    DJ,

Way to go, looks very nice to me. I am still waiting for a window of good temperature to put my final seal coating on. Weather is very unsettled here. The moment I take the tarps off it sprinkles......Nice work.
