    Ok, so instead of filling it with a brick wedge or high heat mortar you put in 1/3 of a brick on it's side. I follow. So I'd have about 2 or 3 bricks stacked like that to cover my gap area. My mortar joint for some of these might line up with my joints below. I'll be considering this option thanks. Any other ideas???

    So cut two bricks to fit like the picture below?:

    I ran into that on my build, and just on that side of the arch, too. What I did is I cut the corners off of a brick turned on its side. So, start with a 1/3 brick, turned to be 3" H x 2.5" W x 4.5" D. Then cut the inside bottom corners until it makes a point that fits into your gap, with the top sitting flush with the neighboring bricks in the next ring.

    You can see my kludgy fix just to the left of the really short bricks above the arch in this picture:

    Ok so hopefully my last issue before I finish my dome... (major in my mind):

    I think I have the dreaded drop or taper by my arch. When I go to bring my bricks into my arch from my ring with my IT the following pics show what occurs:

    This pic shows that my dome arch and rear of my ring is level...mostly that's a good thing:


    This is a pic of what my brick looks like when broght into my arch... (How Do I Fill This GAP !!!) Can I just make a triangle wedge??

    I'm going to do exactly the same thing - raise my outer arch by 1 inch to allow for the reveal. But I will use some "spacer" bricks to flatten the top for the chimney vent plate.

    Does the "79" in your user name indicates something? Is it 1979 and is this a significant date for you? (It is the year I graduated high school!)

    Good deal I can't wait to see it! All of the bricks in my outer arch are 1/2" higher than my inner arch to make my reveal for my oven entrance. To make a nice flat surface for my anchor plate to sit on I need to flatten the middle 3 bricks or raise the back arch by 1/2" or so.

    That looks good, K79! It's pretty much exactly what I am going to do - with the exception of flattening the keystone brick and the two adjacent ones. If I'm lucky and I complete mine this weekend I will post photos!

    I've never worked with brick so I'm a little uncertain of these sorts of things. I like the idea of that little ledge but I don't think it is necessary.

    The buttress is very important for our arch design and no I'm not worried at all about that little bit of steel up against my outer arch wall.

    Hi K79

    are you thinking that one of these options will be structurally better? I'm no structural engineer (actually I am am electrical engineer!) but they both looks similar to me in terms of structural support. In which case I would go with the simpler design!

    Question back to you - I am also thinking of buttressing my outer arch - are you worried about heat loss through the firebrick and angle iron? I was thinking about using some leftover CalSil insulation board to place between the arch support bricks and the buttress (which in my case might be red brick)

    Ok, I'm wondering if I should cut out a ledge on my outer brick wall Option 1.

    Or if I should just butt my arch right against my wall Option 2 (right side option)
    text is cut off because my photo is too big.

    this is a picture of my keystone before it went in. My camera won't focus close enough to take a picture of it inside the dome!

    yes, I will probably wait two weeks.

    Yes, I will ultimately wrap the dome in a Ceramic Fiber blanket

    You can drive out the water with insulation on or off. There are pros and cons for each method. With the blanket off the moisture can escape more easily and you can inspect the outer brick surface. However, because the moisture reduces the temperature there will be a massive difference in the temperature of the inside and outer surfaces of the dome bricks. This is not good because temperature is related to thermal expansion and the more even that is the better if you are interested in reducing cracking. Another example of this is the cracking of uninsulated clay flue liners.I prefer to drive the water out slowly with the insulation on. It is really hard to go slow when you get to this stage because you are so keen to get it working. There will be lots of water still present even though you think it must be dry. If in doubt throw a sheet of plastic over the oven while firing and see if there is any condensation under it.

    Are you waiting two weeks as well? Also are you wrapping the dome with ceramic fiber blanket? I'm assuming that that should be put on after the curing fires right? Also any photos of your keystone at the top of your dome?
