I got another few hours this evening and got my vent arch finished. It turned out pretty good I still need to clean it up a little better but I did not want to disturb the smaller bricks that I had just layed. The bricks I used for the arch don't clean up as well as the rest I used for the dome. Oh well. I used what I could find at the time. I ended up useing a chamfer for my heat break . I have about an inch of flat that is 1/4" from the entry and then flares back about 1 1/4" it seams like it should work and was super easy to do. I hope it works like I think it will.

I am going to do another hard weekend of work. I am heading out of work at noon and going to get my studs for the enclosure and prep table. I think I am going to do 18 gage walls and maby 16 gage roof. I will see how much of a difference there is. I am hoping that my chimney adapter will show up tomarrow. It is only comming from less than 100 miles away. So it should be here if they shipped it on Tuesday. I want to get it insulated and hope to frame the walls and roof and at least get up the sheeting.

One question though do I need to tie down my insulation and and what do people use ? I have some black tie wire will that work? Do people put anchors in to the slab or could I just run a few screws in to the ceramic board insulation at the bottom to help hold it down. Thanks for the help.

Rebar tie wire worked perfectly for me. I dropped some screws into the slab and wrapped it around those to hold it down

Randy, I got my bricks from Smith Sharpe, and they look just like the ones you picked up for your vent. That is their med duty brick, rated to 2200 degrees...their next brick is rated to 2700 degrees. They are Smithfield non-branded out of Illinois. I've attached the spec sheet. They are considered med duty, although they do not meet the specs on the FB brick primer for med duty bricks and would be considered light duty. The next grade of brick, which are a deeper yellow, a bit smoother, and a bit heavier are about 25% more expensive. After spending $350 on brick, I thought that was enough. But you're right, they don't clean up as well. I bought samples of the other ones and the smoothness is noticeable.

Thanks DJ that is what I was thinking. I thought it should be held down some how. Gastagg you are right on as to the bricks. They are the ones you said. As my other jet dp bricks looked like a factory edge when cut. Not these. It is rough . Oh well they will not be visible.

The flue arch looks great. Any wire that is not painted or coated with plastic will be fine. Simple stranded picture hanging wire is what I used I a couple of places but I found it stayed put quite well by itself.

Thanks chip for the complements. What I have is rebar tie wire. So I will use that.

I pulled my form for the arch today and got the top squared off. And packed in my ceramic rope and then caulked the gap of the heat break. I also stopped on my way home today and got my steel studs. I went with 18 gage. They seem pretty stout and should work nicely. Well off to menards to get more stuff.

Well I got some good news and bad news. Good I got the vermicreete done on the outside of the vent. Bad news the chimney adapter I other ed almost a week ago is not here and menards does not know if it is on backorder or where it is

Well final post for the night. I got the ceramic blanket installed tonight. It went better than I thought it might. It really does stay put pretty good. I took some Ramset nail anchors and shot them in to the slab and used them to hold the blanket down. That is some nasty stuff. The bugs even left me alone while I was working with it. Make sure you use a mask when you use it.

On a separate note. I am very glad that I did not go the vermicreete route. I did not really like working with it. I hope I did it right. I did 8 to 1 vermiculite to Portland. I will see tomorrow how it has set up.

Looks great from the inside I am sure you are good to go. Thanks for the photo. You may want to slightly round off the edges that are closest to the dome to make the smoke move easier thru the opening.. Leave the outer edge sharp.

Do you mean to take a grinder and take the edge of and round it off a little? I do have a diamond cup wheel. I just worrie that it could knock lose a brick.

Wait a while, let things firm up. I have a nice smooth diamond blade for my 4 inch that you can borrow. No rush and if you ar happy with the smoke exiting it does not even need to be done. Just optimizing the smoke trail.
