AN ellipse is a squished circle. most curved sections of these domes seem to follow the curve of an ellipse. This link was posted in another thread, here it is, its worth a look. If you scroll to bottom of the page you can see what they call a "prolate ellipse". so basically you can draw this curve by using 2 focal points and a piece of string of fixed length.
This is the method i used to make the plywood templates for my dome.

 I have some cleaning to do but for the most part I think it came out ok. No supports, forms, or braces used; just HS-50, one yellow string, and a little patience.
							
						
 This is not a political statement; for the record-I'm not for or against unions, I just thought it looked cool.
