Course 8 is done. Definitely took some adjustments above the arch to make the oval disappear. I have not done measurements or fine tuning with the grinder, but that will be done in a couple days after the mortar hardens.

I feel like the snail compared to a few supersonic builders lately, but slow and consistant will be my motto.

I want to figure a way to bring in the quantity of bricks for the next course. This will be my project too.

    What will be your plan?

The way I drew it up, the bricks end up being around 5/8 inch wide (on the inside of the dome) at the finale coarse. This has to happen to keep all the bricks on center. That kinda scares the crap out of me. But at the end of the day, it shouldn't matter, it's just going to require alot more cutting. In regard to getting back to working on my oven - I use my beerometer; if I can set my beer down outside for an hour, and it's still cold enough to drink - it's to cold to work

Les, I believe you are right. I may go the route of using full halves, mixed with smaller ones, as long as I keep close to middle points below. I figure with 5 courses left, and the tightening of brick widths, I can do the mixture. I survey each course for advantages as I go, and hope I can do this.
What do you think? What will be your plan? You have got to be ready to get going on yours fairly quick as well?

    ...or one or two less.

Wait a minute, edit in progress. Les is probably right. I shouldn't second guess a master. If you continue to downsize the bricks, it may be the same number for each row. Mine numbers went down because I went to 3 inch then two-inch-wide bricks as I closed.

    Robert,

If you are lining the bricks up on center, they should be getting narrower in width as you ascend to the dome. The count should remain the same.

I have finished 27 of the expected 32 bricks for course 8. I have my final 5 outside my arch area where I need to address the oval concerns. If all goes well, it will be done over the next couple evenings.

The reason I likely have more bricks per upper courses is from my not lining up bricks, but rather always going center to the bricks below.

I tried to read through a week's worth of posts on this thread, but just about the only comments I understood were Dave and George's...

I gather you went ahead with the big outside joints though? Good for you, I think it will work out fine! And it looks really good, its nice to be back in time to see the final rounds...

    Great Job,
Enjoy the next row being a complete ring. It will be a challenge of a different sort.

    7 is done!!!!

    Transition is done!!!!!

I was amazed at how fast 7 went, only exception being the transition area. I believe I can have 8 done by end of week.

As for my dome, course 7 is 22.125 from center at inside top face. The angle is 50 degrees.

    Enjoy the photos....

I have two bricks left and then 7 is done. My last two are the middle of the arch, where so many angles and grinding to make them fit, exist. I will be watching my college play bball (Nevada), then out to finish.

Sunday AM is grinding clean the bricks. After that, I am devoting the day to the family. I will also be showing my Annemarie the oven for the first time

Oh ya, and photos for all of you.

I am nuts to do this. I swear, if it weren't for my promise for my older daughter, mine would be on hold too. In a way, it is fun to feel the pains of winter.....

Les, once the oven is done, and the cures start, you are definately invited to partake. I was even thinking of a visit from you leading into completetion of the bricks if you desired? Let me know.

I'm with you, Les (and I'm in mild Kentucky!). I can't imagine what working outside in Reno this time of year is like.

God speed dude! When you are done, and I think that is going to be very soon, I would like to come on by and see one of your fires - I'm already getting heat envy
